Even though you follow a good skin-care routine to fight ageing, you would reach a point where it isn’t effective anymore. Under such circumstances, the only option you have is to seek professional help and choose to undergo Dermal filler injections that can provide your much-needed rescue!

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal filler injections are a non-invasive treatment approach that involves introducing a gel-based substance under the skin. These dermal fillers consist of natural or synthetic ingredients like Hyaluronic acid molecules or Poly-L-lactic acid. Once the component is injected to a specific part, it fills in the wrinkles providing you with a flawless look. Some people may also undergo a lip augmentation process to enhance and plump lips, rectify jaw-line defects etc. Thus, dermal filler treatment works towards diminishing the effects of ageing.

Results of dermal filler treatments are long-lasting, depending upon the type of filler injected in the treatment. The result of permanent dermal fillers usually lasts from 6-18months up to 5 years. They are specially formulated for thick-skinned parts like nasolabial folds, etc. and don’t decompose quickly in the body. The fillers require regular touch-up/maintenance sessions to hold the desired appearance in place.

Please note that dermal fillers and botox are not the same. Botox treatment reduces the wrinkles and facial flaws due to ageing by paralyzing the muscles using purified botulinum bacteria and can’t enhance volume. On the other hand, dermal filler treatment restores facial volume and fixes ageing deformations by just pushing gel-based injectables under the skin.

Different types of dermal fillers are:

  1. Hyaluronic acid fillers- These dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid molecules naturally produced by our body as a component of joint fluids or eye fluid; this acts as a buffer or lubricant. With age, skin starts to get thin and loses the tightness or elasticity due to collagen’s reduced production. When hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are injected, it fills the space left due to lack of collagen. Common acid fillers are Juvederm, Puragen, Voluma, Restylane, etc. The longevity of such treatment ranges from 6 months to 2years. In case you are not content with the result, the gel-based injectable can be dissolved by escalating the decomposition rate using Hyaluronidase, which may include minor-to-no side-effects.
  2. Synthetic wrinkle fillers: Synthetic fillers constitute artificially created poly-L-lactic acid to stimulate collagen production. The results of this procedure can take time to be apparent until new collagens are produced. The effect lasts two years or more. This can also be used to build-up cheeks and enhance nasolabial folds. Side effects include swelling, redness, bruises and bumps under the skin. Typical products in the market are Sculptra, Silicone and Radiesse.
  3. Collagen wrinkle fillers: The collagen that has reduced due to ageing is injected into the skin. Though the results are very natural-looking, the effect lasts only up to 3-4months. Side effects include allergies, bruises and swelling, as the collagen used is taken from cows and may not suit you. Common ones in the market are Cosmoderm, Fibrel and Evolence.
  4. Autologous wrinkle fillers: Initially, one’s body fat is extracted from parts like buttocks, thighs, etc. Later this fat is injected to wrinkled areas or where volume restoration is needed. Sometimes, blood can be used instead of fat too. Redness, swelling and bruises are side effects. Impact stays up to 1-2 years.

Is it safe to use dermal fillers?

Though it’s a non-surgical alternative to fight to age, it can have adverse impacts if not appropriately injected, like swelling. One must consult a dermatologist and know if he/she is allergic to any substance among the chosen fillers. An experienced surgeon is necessary for the treatment. Some dangerous adversities may include skin rashes, acne or infection. The risk depends on the type and brand of fillers used for the treatment, region of treatment and amount of filler substance used.
